Story – Line: ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ is a 1981 novel by Michelle Mogorian. It follows a young boy named Willie Beach who is evacuated from London during the air raids that formed part of the blitz of World War 2. He was put into the care of an elderly man named Tom Oakley.
Characters: There two main characters in this novel, Tom Oakley & Willie Beach. Tom Oakley changes throughout the novel from someone who doesn’t participate to become a key member of the community. Under Tom’s guidance the evacuee Willie blossoms into a young vibrant boy. Their friendship is heart-warming to read about in a novel that is set during the war.
Themes: This story deals with many issues such as relationships and friendships. Not only does this story deal with a father and son but it also deals with friendship between five young people. This book made me think about how difficult life must have been for teenagers my age during the 2nd world war.
Personal Response: I enjoyed this book because I liked the story-line it was easy to understand. I also liked it because it is filled with tension and suspence. Many of the events shocked me which made me read on.
